Google has decided to end support for the Play Movies app on select platforms. Smart TV. The procedure is already underway, with users of these devices now able to transfer their accounts on the app to YouTube, which will take the place of the tool being shut down. The company announced that, starting June 15, Google Play Movies (in the United States, Play Movies & TV is found as Google TV for Android users) will be out on Roku, Samsung, LG and Vizio.
Since the YouTube app is available on these devices, the change seems simple. Users will simply need to log in to the tool with their Google account and the content purchased through Play Movies will be available there. In some countries, TV shows were available through the app that was being discontinued, but this is not the case in Brazil, where content is limited to movies.
Google says that Play Credits can be used on YouTube to purchase existing content, and that purchases made from the Play Store library can be viewed on YouTube. Customers won't have access to their watchlist set up in the app that is losing support, but they can set up a new one and will have access to all their previous purchases, allowing them to browse, buy, and rent new content in this "new environment."
However, purchases made on YouTube are not compatible with family sharing, which is limited to purchases made on the website or in the Play Movies app. This detail is considered negative by some users who commented on Google's official post.
Disapproval
In fact, there are many interesting observations being made in the company's announcement, with many lamenting and criticizing the new development. Some people simply pointed out that it is inconvenient, but others criticized the situation, because children have access to YouTube to access the family library. This compromises parental control, as they do not want their children browsing Google's various video platforms.
The complaints don't stop there. Some people have said that the shutdown is detrimental because YouTube doesn't support 5.1 Dolby Digital, like Google Play Movies does. Another person expressed frustration with the amount of ads on YouTube (which may be one of the reasons Google decided to make this change now). In the comment, they said that they could eliminate the annoying ads by getting a premium subscription, which they won't do.
O Google, apparently, is trying to get around the dissatisfaction, at least in part, by contacting some users via email to offer credits to those affected by the change. This way, they will be able to purchase new content through YouTube, which has become a very robust platform. Google Play Music was also recently discontinued, with its users migrating to YouTube Music.
It is important to note that the Play Movies app will still be available on smartphones, such as iPhones, as well as Apple Android TVs and televisions, such as the HiSense H9G Quantum Series. However, it is not unlikely that, in the near future, the definitive closure of the application will happen.
