Last week, the Apple launched the family of iPhone 12, which features the A14 Bionic processor. However, the company introduced this processor a month earlier, in the 4th generation iPad Air. When comparing the results of the two devices, AnTuTu, an app that measures the performance of mobile devices, reported that for some reason, the iPad is outperforming the iPhone 12.
AnTuTu's performance report shows that the iPad Air 4 has 4GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and the iPadOS version is 14.0.1. Overall, the tablet scored 660.038 points. The CPU performance comes in at 183.817 points, while the GPU score is 261.927 points.
On the iPhone 12, the overall score reached 564.899 points. The CPU scored 167.894 points, which is 9,5% lower than the iPad Air's score. In addition, the GPU score on the iPhone 12 is also lower: 201.085 points. Here, there is a bigger gap of about 30%.
Such a huge discrepancy makes us wonder if the Apple changed parameters of the iPhone's Bionic A14 so that the battery lasts longer and also heats up less.

In terms of RAM, the iPhone 12 has 4GB, just like the iPad in question. And the iPad’s UX (user experience) score is around 97.026, while the iPhone’s UX is only 90.243. This leads us to believe that the iPad’s operating system (iPadOS) performs better on the A14 chip when compared to iOS. And, a similar AnTuTu score from an iPhone 12 Pro Max suggested a score close to its sibling (iPhone 12). It recorded an overall score of 572.333 points.
iPhone 12 may have lower performance due to iOS and A14 Bionic CPU
That said, just like AnTuTu's report says, perhaps the A14 Bionic Apple work better with an iPad Air 4, better managing heat and battery life. Of course, all of this will remain just speculation unless the Apple have a better explanation. Also, a graphical representation shows that the iPhone 12's GPU score has dropped compared to last year's iPhone 11 Pro Max, as shown below:

It's still too early to comment further on the AnTuTu app's results. In any case, this serves as a warning that you need to keep an eye on the iPhone 12's CPU and also on iOS.
