Six months after launching the iPhone SE, and about a week after a leak, Apple today presented the new generation of its smartphones at an event in Apple Park, its headquarters in Cupertino, California, with the iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
In this post we will talk about the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini, but if you want to know more about the iPhone 12 Pro and 12 Pro Max, click here.
A14 Bionic and 5G
All new iPhones are powered by the A14 Bionic processor, which the company says is far superior to its competitors. They are also the company's first smartphones. Apple to have 5G connectivity. Support is for sub-6 GHz (with greater range) and mmWave (faster) networks.
The A14 Bionic is manufactured using the 5nm process, and according to information from Apple, has up to 50% faster performance than any other smartphone chip in both CPU and GPU.
Super Retina XDR displays
The screens on the new iPhones are not LCD, but OLED, and have a brightness of 1200 nits when playing HDR content. The Super Retina XDR display on the standard model is 6,1 inches, while the iPhone 12 Mini is 5,4 inches.
ceramic shield

The Ceramic Shield glass on the new iPhones features nanoscale ceramic crystals, which increases its resistance without compromising its level of transparency. It is a partnership between Apple with Corning, creator of Gorilla Glass.
The iPhone 12 display also features the double ion-exchange process, which was used to prevent scratches on the previous generation's rear glass. The smartphone's aerospace-grade aluminum edges also protect the sides of the display, and the Apple ensures that resistance to falls has increased by up to four times compared to last year's model.
Additionally, the smartphones are also waterproof with IP68 certification.
What's not in the box
As expected, the new iPhones don't come with headphones or a power adapter in the box, just a Lightning to USB-C cable.
Lisa Jackson, who is vice president of environment at Apple, said that there are already 700 million headphones and two billion Lightning power adapters in the hands of consumers, and also said that with the decision, the Apple will cut 2 million metric tons of carbon emissions.
Additionally, chargers also were removed from the boxes of other old models still sold by Apple. Despite the ecological justifications, many people on social media were very upset with the news, even though it had been speculated before.
The truth is that whoever is buying an iPhone for the first time in this generation will have to buy its accessories separately, either from Apple or some other manufacturer.
Cameras that record videos with Dolby Vision
The iPhone 12 and 12 Mini feature dual cameras, both with 12 megapixels: a wide camera with an F/1.6 aperture with optical image stabilization and an ultra-wide camera with an F/2.4 aperture and a 120˚ angle.
The biggest difference is the ability to record 4K HDR videos at up to 30fps using Dolby Vision, which can then be viewed on the screen and edited on the iPhone itself. In addition, both cameras work with Night Mode and have features such as Deep Fusion and Smart HDR 3.
The return of MagSafe
A Apple reused the term and inspiration from the well-known MagSafe, the magnetic connector technology found in MacBooks. The new MagSafe is the wireless charging system present in the entire iPhone 12 line. The magnets are also found in accessories such as cases and even wallets to hold credit cards. With them, the connectors align to ensure that wireless charging is more efficient and therefore faster.
Prices and colors
What about prices? The iPhone 12 Mini starts at $699, and the iPhone 12 starts at $799 (US prices). Apple has not yet announced prices and a release date in Brazil.
The new line has five color options: dark blue, light green, red, black and white.
