Unexpectedly for most gamers, Sony has revealed an increase in the prices of PlayStation Plus subscriptions starting next month. The service's annual plans are about to undergo major adjustments.

  • The price increase was first communicated through the blog from PlayStation, in the post where the PS Plus games for September were revealed.
  • Check out the new prices:
    • 12-month PlayStation Plus Essential subscription — R$278,90 (previously R$199,90, increase of 39,4%);
    • 12-month PlayStation Plus subscription Extra — R$475,90 (previously R$339,90, 40% increase);
    • 12-month PlayStation Plus Deluxe subscription — R$538,90 (previously R$389,90, an increase of 38,4%).
  • These new prices will come into effect from September 6th.

Sony did not disclose whether prices for monthly or quarterly plans will change, but noted that “the new prices for 12-month subscriptions will still offer a discount compared to the cost of purchasing 1- or 3-month plans over 12 months.”

Current PS Plus members don't need to worry right away, as the price increase will only go into effect on their subsequent annual renewals after November 6. However, Sony warns that any changes to the subscription, such as upgrades, downgrades or purchasing additional time, will incur the new rate.

Sony's reason for the increased prices is the chance to "keep offering high-quality games and other benefits in our subscription service."

Introduced last year, PlayStation Plus represents Sony's response to Xbox Game Pass, allowing players to enjoy a rotation of games each month. The lineup for September will include games like Saints Row, Black Desert: Traveler Edition and Generation Zero.

While Sony is touting the benefits and quality of the games it offers, there is concern among many players that the price hike could make it harder for some to access. PlayStation Plus users are now faced with a choice: invest more in an annual subscription to keep the benefits or reevaluate their options, possibly considering different alternatives.
