Spotify has launched a new feature that alerts users to new music releases, podcasts and other content from artists they follow on the platform. The “what’s new” tab is expected to arrive on Android and iOS devices around the world next week.

According to Spotify, “What’s New makes it easier than ever to catch all the latest music and episodes from the creators you follow.” The platform highlights that updates to this tab will happen in real time, allowing listeners to enjoy their favorite artists as soon as new material is available.

Although the content alert is useful for any content producer registered on the platform, Spotify's new feature will mainly benefit podcast producers who will have an additional resource to contact their followers, bringing the Spotify player even closer to RSS feed aggregator applications, such as Pocket Casts and Google Podcasts itself.

A personalized news page based on user tastes is a long-standing criticism from Spotify customers, which, despite recent changes to its home page, still prioritizes displaying suggestions based on the genres of each profile, which does not always mean that the release displayed is from an artist you like.

Gifs in your player

In addition to the new tab, last week Spotify announced a partnership with GIF platform Giphy to launch a musical GIF sharing features, such as clips. According to the streaming platform, images of the artists will be made available on the Giphy platform that automatically redirect the user to their page on Spotify.

Artists who will be able to use the new feature include Doja Cat, The Weekend, Post Malone, Nicki Minaj and Conan Gray. Spotify is expected to add new artists to its GIF catalog soon.
