Monday (28/06) started with Qualcomm revealing to the world the Snapdragon 888+, its new most powerful processor (and new most powerful Android processor), during the opening of the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2021, which is being held in Barcelona. Cristiano Amon, CEO of the company, was responsible for presenting the evolution of the processor in comparison with the current generation of Qualcomm's 888 chip, until then the brand's most powerful on the market.

The main new features of the Snapdragon 888+ are the 5,45% increase in the Arm Cortex-X1 CPU clock speed, which went from 2,84GHz to 2,995GHz, and the 20% improvement in artificial intelligence processing, which went from 28 to 32 TOPS. According to Qualcomm's announcement, other settings of the hardware are identical.

This means that the Snapdragon 888+ has the same Adreno 680 and Snapdragon Elite Gaming GPU features, FastConnect 6900 capabilities, and a Spectra 580 triple ISP, which is capable of capturing from up to three lenses simultaneously. Qualcomm's idea is to start pairing future flagships on the market between the third and fourth quarters of 2021.

Alongside the launch, information has already begun to emerge about which smartphone models will be the first to feature the Snapdragon 888+ under the hood later this year. And the fight to find out who will be the first is fierce.

Honor will be the first with Snapdragon 888+

Monday's comments indicate that the Samsung foldables, Galaxy Fold 3 and Flip 3, will be among them, as well as future launches from OnePlus (OnePlus 9T), Motorola, Asus and Xiaomi. None of these manufacturers, however, have officially confirmed the use of the new chipset. The only one that has done so is Honor.

The company that was part of the Huawei family announced today, almost at the same time as the Snapdragon 888+ was presented, that the Honor Magic 3 series will have the powerful processor as part of their settings. The confirmation was made by Fang Fei, president of the company.

“We are delighted to see the collaboration between Honor and Qualcomm Technologies take another step forward. The groundbreaking advancements we see in the new Snapdragon 888 Plus 5G Mobile Platform make it a perfect fit for the flagship Magic 3 series. The platform’s industry-leading performance and AI gains give us the flexibility to create a mobile experience that will meet the needs of even the most demanding users,” he said.

Rumors about the arrival of Honor's new Magic series coming with the Snapdragon 888 began as early as March. At the time, the website TencentNews He added that the brand considered this merger to be fundamental to its plan to surpass Huawei, the brand's former partner.

The next Magic phone arrives nearly three years after the last in the line was produced. More than just Qualcomm's top-of-the-line chipset, the flagship is being designed to become a benchmark in the market. Although it has not yet been officially confirmed, the smartphone's arrival is planned for July 2021, that is, before Samsung's foldables.
