Produced by newcomer Sequoia Games, Flex NBA is an augmented reality board game that appeals to sports trading card enthusiasts. The basketball game follows the success of NBA Top Shot, a blockchain platform that has been popularizing collectibles again in the United States, but has a different gameplay dynamic.
In Flex NBA, the board is a hybrid, combining physical pieces with the interface of the mobile app. The game is actually based on hexagonal discs that function as collectible cards and can be tracked in the app. Once paired in the Flex NBA mobile app, they overlay augmented reality animations of the American basketball league's athletes. The goal is to knock out all of the opponent's players, damaging their "trust points" - something very similar to other card games, such as the popular Magic: The Gathering.

With the cards registered in the app – ownership verification is done through a system similar to a blockchain – games can be played in person or online. However, players cannot purchase cards only in the virtual environment, meaning the mobile app would function as a mirror of the actions on the “physical” board.
“Flex NBA is a mobile board game, a crossover, something we believe is unique,” explains Dan Choi, the game’s creator. “Everyone remembers that scene in Star Wars where Chewbacca is playing 3D chess on the Millennium Falcon. With today’s technology, we can bring that to life. Just by hovering your phone over the board, you’ll see your players come to life and interact with each other.”
Card prices range from $35 to $699
Depending on your contribution on Kickstarter, the Flex NBA funding platform, you will receive a specific pack of cards. Prices range from $35 to $699. In the latter, you will get the “Supreme Flex Domination Pack”, which corresponds to advanced items such as cards for MVP-level players – the best in the league in recent seasons such as James Harden, from the Brooklyn Nets, or Stephen Curry, from the Golden State Warriors.
Sequoia Games has an official partnership with the NBA and the National Association of Professional Gamers. The startup will begin shipping card packs in July. If you’re interested, you can contribute to the game’s funding here.
