If in China a woman recently had a hard time buying an iPhone 12 (directly from the Apple) to receive an apple yogurt, a man in the UK, when buying apples, tried the reverse process, and received an iPhone SE from Apple of toast.

Contrary to what one might imagine, however, there was no mistake on the part of the supermarket. In fact, it was a surprise promotion run by the Tesco chain. The “Super Substitute” gave the winner, purely at random, a valuable prize, which also varied, depending on the products purchased.

The man who lives in the UK is Nick James, the lucky guy who bought apples and received a free iPhone from Apple in the promotion. He could have also been awarded a Samsung tablet or a Nokia product, if his shopping list had different products. The Tesco promotion “matched” a Samsung tablet to the lucky customer who had purchased a bar of soap (or a tablet). And the smartphone this time could have been a Nokia, if the shopping list had gnocchi (because, for them, gnocchi apparently reminds them of Nokia).

“A big thank you to Tesco. On Wednesday afternoon I went to pick up my shopping and got this little surprise: an iPhone SE from Apple. Apparently we made the purchase of apples and, by pure luck, we received an iPhone Apple. Made my kids' week,” the man posted on Twitter.

The people at The Mirror talked to Nick James, who confirmed the surprise and said he thought, at the time, that the gift in the basket was something very different. “I expected the surprise to be an Easter egg or something like that. I was a little shocked, to say the least.”

In addition, the promotion can also give future apple buyers other products from Apple. Also on the list, in addition to the iPhone, are AirPods headphones and other gadgets, both from Apple as Samsung and Nokia.
