The mobile phone market may be about to see a new record set by Apple in 2021. According to Dan Ives, an analyst at the consultancy Wedbush, the Apple can sell between 240 and 250 million iPhones until December, surpassing – and by far – the mark established in 2015, when it sold 231 million units of the flagship.

“While the Street is forecasting about 220 million iPhone units for this fiscal year, we believe that, based on this current trajectory, the Cupertino company still has the potential to sell more than 240 million units, reaching 250 million, a number that would surpass the previous record,” he commented to the website. According to the expert, there are 350 million iPhone users spread across the planet waiting for a good opportunity to update their devices, and it is the vast majority of this group of customers who will contribute to the Apple surpass the record set six years ago in the mobile phone market. “This could translate into an unprecedented super cycle for the brand,” Dan Ives bet.

If the Wedbush analyst's predictions come true, the iPhone 12 flagships will become the most popular in the Apple since the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus models. Both revolutionized the market when they were launched in September 2014, largely due to their significantly larger screens than those found on Apple's main rivals.

Another point that may be weighing favorably on cell phone sales Apple to break the record in 2021 is the resale value of the iPhone 12. According to a SellCell's recent comparison, Apple's model is one of those that suffers the least depreciation after purchase. While the iPhone 12 loses, on average, 33,7% of its value, a rival like the Samsung Galaxy S21, for example, drops 57,1% after being taken out of the box.

The projections, however, go against what predicted Samik Chatterjee, market analyst at JP Morgan bank. In a note released to investors about a month ago, the expert acknowledged that demand for the company's flagship Apple remains strong, but “has started to fall”, and will close 2021 below the initial projection. So: who will close 2021 with the right forecast? Who bet that the Apple Will it break records in cell phone sales or did anyone place their bets on the iPhone 12 falling from the second half of the year?
