We recently launched a guide to help you choose your next smartphone, taking into account several factors, such as the manufacturer's commitment to its devices. An illustrative example of why this is so important is offered by LG, which according to a schedule posted on its website — in Germany — it will take a long time to offer Android 11, in addition to leaving out some recent devices.
Released in the early second half of 2020, Android 11 has been receiving record adoption, this is due to the efforts of smartphone manufacturers that use the OS and quickly provide the update. Samsung, Sony, OnePlus and Xiaomi are examples of agility, but LG is not. And everything indicates that this will not change any time soon: it seems that only the Velvet 5G and G8X ThinQ are expected to receive the update in the first half of the year, with the 5G cell phone expected to receive the update in April.
Therefore, other cell phones are expected to arrive by September (Velvet 4G and G8S ThinQ) or December (K52 and K42). The LG Velvet 4G is the South Korean company's most recent launch in Brazil in terms of premium mid-range, and will only be able to receive Android 11 when Android 12 is already officialized by Google.
K Line 2020 abandoned?
Of course, the dates given are the deadlines. However, something that draws even more attention in the schedule is the absence of several smartphones launched recently: the K41S and K51S and K61, for example, are not on the list. These are devices launched about a year ago and, apparently, will be able to count on the only update they have ever received: Android 10.
With this, LG may be showing that even with Project Treble — which aims to speed up the distribution of Android 11 — its current strategy will fall far short of committing to more agility and updates. Even so, there is nothing stopping the South Korean company from continuing to distribute Google's security patches for longer, which is often essential to fix serious privacy bugs. Of course, the addition of new features in the long term would also be interesting, but those looking for that may need to turn their attention to other brands.
