All about the best cell phones

It was announced that the Surface Duo, Microsoft's dual-screen smartphone, will gain support for Android 11. The news was announced this week during the launch of the smartphone in the European market and Canada. The bad news for those who are anxiously awaiting the update, however, is that it is still expected to take some time, with the release expected to take place between June and August.

Update is an old promise from Microsoft

A ecosystem has been promising the arrival of Android 11 on the Surface Duo for a long time, since long before the smartphone's launch. Reports from June 2020, that is, three months before the official launch, already indicated the company's plans to implement Android 11 on the device. Furthermore, in order to complete these plans, Microsoft even went as far as to buy the company who was developing his exclusive version of Android.

But one question remains: what could be the reason for the implementation of Android 11 on the Surface Duo taking so long to get off the ground? The likely hypothesis is related to incompatibilities between Microsoft's code and Android's code. Or, better put, the approach chosen by Google and by Microsoft to resolve code differences.

We know that increasing compatibility between Android and every type of device is ideal for Google. After all, the greater the compatibility, the greater the number of smartphones and tablets using almost exclusively everything that Google offers.

Changes will apply to future dual-screen devices

So, to solve the Surface Duo problem, the company has chosen to modify the codebase of its operating system according to the difficulties encountered by Microsoft. In this way, the changes in the Android code will facilitate the future development of other devices with two screens.

This is certainly great for Google, but a little less so for Microsoft. It's not entirely bad for Microsoft because, despite the delay in the update, the collaboration between the companies may ensure a lower risk of bugs and software issues on the Surface Duo. Ultimately, we'll have to wait until mid-year to find out if the delay will be made up for.
