Microsoft is developing its own processor with ARM architecture, the same one used by the M1, Apple. The chipset could power projects such as servers and the next generation of Surface – the Windows 10-based tablet.
Microsoft's interest in developing an ARM processor for the Surface line is not exactly new. The Surface Pro X, one of the company's main models, already uses a chipset based on this architecture: the Microsoft SQ-1, which is nothing more than the result of a partnership between the company and Qualcomm to develop a modified version of the Snapdragon 8CX.
However, as found by Bloomberg News, this time Microsoft would have assigned a team of internal developers to create the new line of processors, once and for all eliminating its dependence on other companies such as Intel and Qualcomm itself. The device would also be used in the company's server line.
The future will be ARM-based
The ARM architecture is the apple of computing's eye. Through it, it is possible to develop the famous SoCs (System-on-a-Chip) that allow the union of several elements - processor, memory and GPU - in a single microchip. In the case of compact devices such as smartphones, tablets and ultrabooks, the technology makes perfect sense. With these processors, the device can save energy and also space, making the devices even smaller and more efficient.
Just as Microsoft dreams of developing its own ARM processor for the Surface, other companies are already experimenting with the architecture, and Apple, who recently proved the firepower of the M1 in new generation of MacBooks.
Change can cause problems for developers
While Microsoft is looking to the medium-term future, the move to an ARM processor could create more work for developers of Surface apps. That's because, with the exception of the Surface Pro X, all other devices in the lineup feature Intel or AMD processors, which are X86-based.
In the case of servers, which require constant monitoring and updating, at first, the change will be an even bigger headache, as companies will have to work on two different architectures when thinking about solutions and updates for the platform.
This is also a problem that Apple currently faces having to emulate the older architecture of MacBooks to make certain applications compatible with the M1.
In any case, the interest of such traditional companies in computing indicates that we will see the format being increasingly used by the market.
