California-based cybersecurity company FireEye said hackers gained access to its network and stole data and tools it used to detect and strengthen cyber defenses on customers' security systems.
FireEye did not say exactly how the hackers broke into the company, but the news was reported by The Washington Post. According to the publication, the target was “certain government customers,” but not necessarily from the US, according to sources.
FireEye is one of the world's leading cybersecurity companies and has contracts with the United States government. The company's client list also includes Equifax, the third largest credit management company in the US, as well as the Saudi Arabian Ministry of Petroleum and banks in several countries. However, according to the company, data from these clients was not accessed.
Russian conspiracy?
While the company’s CEO Kevin Mandia did not attribute the attack to any group, anonymous sources have suggested that the Russian Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) may have been involved. They have been identified as the operators in the chain of command of a group of Russian hackers accused of attacking researchers in the UK, US and Canada. At the time, the aim was to steal information about Covid-19 vaccines, according to a report by the intelligence services of the three countries. Russia has denied any involvement in the attacks.
Mandia said he had never seen anything like it, referring to the way the cyberspies attacked the network. “They used a combination of techniques that we or our customers have never seen before.” It is not yet known whether the attacks were actually intended to steal FireEye customers’ tools, to actually use them, or simply as a public demonstration of the group’s power.
The FBI continues to investigate the case. In addition to the agency, FireEye also asked Microsoft for help in collaborating in the investigation. Recently, hackers exploited the Windows crashes to attack other devices.
It's good that companies keep their eyes wide open, because for some time now the number of hacker attacks to technology companies.
