The visual is impressive, but the question remains: after all, what is the purpose of the Lg wing? What is the advantage of a cell phone with a rotating screen?
It is not necessarily a smartphone for the average user, but a niche cell phone that offers multiple potentialities and is certainly very innovative, as TIME magazine itself recognized when it gave it LG Wing honored as one of the 100 best inventions of 2020 that make the world a better place. The annual list was released last week and includes inventions that “are changing the way we work, live and even play.”
A cell phone like this is a good option for those who work for Uber, for example. They can keep the route map on the larger screen and continue to receive calls and see messages on the smaller display. Or for those who dream of being a YouTuber, or even for video fans, because while recording or watching a movie on the upper screen, they can use the lower one to control or browse the web, send messages or use any other application.
Just a spin away
According to Hong Shin-tae, senior product planner at LG Mobile in Seoul, the idea for Wing first came to me on the subway. “I noticed a passenger repeatedly rotating his smartphone while playing games and texting at the same time. Then I thought that having separate monitors would offer many different possibilities for using two apps at the same time,” he said in a post on LG Newsroom.
But how do you make a device work reliably over thousands of rotations? The solution was to incorporate a hydraulic damper into a hinge to reduce friction when rotating the screen back and forth multiple times.

According to Jeong Min-yong, a member of the LG Wing development team from the beginning, the team recognized that the key to success would be designing a hinge. “The solution was to employ a double-locking mechanism to disperse the force generated when rotating the screen, helping to ensure that the hinge would remain stable over a long period of use.” In internal tests, the LG Wing’s main screen was rotated 90 degrees more than 200 times — the equivalent of 100 rotations per day, every day for five and a half years.
camera features
The LG Wing has a 6,8-inch main (front) screen and a hidden 4-inch screen, and you can control the frame horizontally and vertically. The second screen works in conjunction with the triple cameras on the back. The front camera is hidden and pops up when a mechanism is activated to take selfies or use the selfie function. Dual Recording Cameras. And because it sits inside the phone in its own enclosure, there's no cutout or other opening to interrupt the flow of the display.
You can also use the rear camera and the selfie camera simultaneously. This allows you to capture someone's action and reaction in the same scene, for example. This is definitely a very powerful feature for content creators because, in addition to the convenience of allowing you to edit two videos and save them together or separately, it offers unprecedented creative possibilities.
In addition to a 64MP main sensor and a 13MP ultra-wide camera, the LG Wing also has a 12MP ultra-wide big pixel camera with five-axis image stabilization that allows you to control the camera and make stable panoramic-style montages, without turning the smartphone vertically. This feature makes it possible to produce images that were previously unimaginable. The device is compatible with 5G and its processor is Snapdragon 7 series.
Initially released in South Korea in October, On the 28th it was India's turn. Since then, the LG Wing has only been sold in the main markets of North America and Europe, with an average price of US$998 or R$5.390 in direct conversion. Even so, it is still more affordable compared to other dual-screen products, including foldables like Samsung's for example. The LG Wing is not yet available in Brazilian stores.
