Qualcomm is expected to unveil the specifications of its Snapdragon 875 platform on December 1. It will be the successor to the current-generation Snapdragon 865 SoC (System on a Chip). While Qualcomm has yet to announce any details about it, the latest leak about the 875 platform came from Chinese social media site Weibo.

Just like the latest processor from Apple, Huawei's A14 Bionic and Kirin 9000, the upcoming Snapdragon 875 will also use a 5nm (nanometer) construction process. Additionally, the 875 will also compete with Samsung's Exynos 2100 SoC, which has also not been officially announced.

According to the informant Digital Chat Station, the Snapdragon 875 will have a tri-cluster configuration. This configuration is a technique in which the cores are divided into three groups. Each group can contain 1, 2 or 4 cores. This technique is efficient because each cluster (or group) is activated according to demand. For example, the cluster that contains one core will only manage basic functions, such as notifications and position sensors. Thus, the other two clusters will be in standby mode, without consuming power. Thus, this saves battery.

Therefore, each cluster is activated only when necessary, offering high performance only when the application requires it. This saves battery power and leaves more energy for the smartphone to be used during the day.

Snapdragon 875 specs show a tri-cluster setup

Thus, according to Digital Chat Station, the Snapdragon 875 features a cluster with a Cortex-X1 super core clocked at 2,84 GHz. The second cluster features three Cortex-A78 cores clocked at 2,42 GHz and the third cluster has four Cortex-A55 cores clocked at 1,8 GHz.

While Qualcomm hit the 3GHz mark with the Cortex-A77 cores in the Snapdragon 865+, it will likely maintain a maximum frequency of 2,84GHz in this upcoming chipset.

Based on previous leaks, the Cortex-X1 could offer up to 23% higher performance than the Cortex-A78 core. It also comes with the new Adreno 660 GPU (Graphic Processor Unit). However, there are no specifications about the performance of this GPU. It will be competing with the Mali-G78 GPU, which will be found in the Kirin 9000 and Exynos 2100 chipsets.

Snapdragon 875 should be in high-end smartphones launched in 2021

The Chinese leaker also claims that the Snapdragon 875 has improved cache efficiency and memory bandwidth. Currently, the highest AnTuTu score for smartphones launched with the Snapdragon 865 mobile platform is 663.752. Earlier this week, benchmarks of the Snapdragon 875 prototype were also leaked.

It managed to score 847.868 points on Antutu, which shows 27,8% more performance compared to the Snapdragon 865. But it must be said that smartphones powered by the Snapdragon 875 are prototypes, which do not have all the hardware and also the minimum number of apps installed. Therefore, the AnTuTu score for official smartphones equipped with the 875 may be lower.

Just for comparison, the iPad Air with the Bionic A14 and the iPhone 12, which also uses the same processor, managed to score 660.038 and 564.899 points, respectively.
