All about the best cell phones

A report from benchmarking app AnTuTu has revealed the global preferences of Android phone users. The report assesses which specifications are their favorites across seven different categories.

The survey was conducted during the third quarter of the year. However, AnTuTu announced that the survey cannot be used as a reference for the market in general. This is because the survey only considers the user base of its application.

How did AnTuTu get the data?

A benchmark application is used to evaluate the specifications of a device. In other words, it evaluates your cell phone and can also test its capabilities. Therefore, it has all the information about the composition and specifications of your device.

These include screen size, how much storage and RAM it has, and what processor it has, among others. It is precisely because of this ability to collect information that AnTuTu's global mobile phone preferences survey considered only its own users.

What screen dimensions and resolutions do users prefer?

There is no device with a greater variety of screen sizes than cell phones. AnTuTu's research reflects this reality well, as different sizes are among the most popular.

Currently, the three most popular screen sizes are 6,4, 6,3, and 6,5 inches, respectively. The most popular screen size is often found on mid-range or high-end phones in previous generations, such as the Galaxy M31 and Galaxy S10+.

On the other hand, phones with screens smaller than 5,5″ have become rarer as budget models that had these screen sizes are being replaced.

Regarding resolution, 1080p has become an undisputed standard among cell phones. In the report, AnTuTu reveals that more than 85% of cell phones already have at least this resolution.

Processors and cores: which are the most used?

Among processors, Qualcomm's Snapdragon remains the most popular, according to AnTuTu's research. In global mobile preferences, it occupies 57,5% of the smartphones of the app's users. In second place are Samsung with its Exynos and Huawei's Hisilicon, responsible for the Kirin processors. Both are in the 14% range, followed by Mediatek with 12,4%.

Regarding the number of cores, octa-core phones are almost the most prevalent. With 95,1% of users, it is possible to see that the pattern extends across all price categories.

Whether budget or premium, eight-core processors are the market standard in 2020.

Which RAM memory is most used in cell phones?

RAM and storage are often the deciding factors when choosing a new phone. According to AnTuTu's global preference reports, phones with 6GB and 4GB are the most popular.

4 GB of RAM is usually present in most budget and mid-range phones. In premium smartphones, we usually only see this amount in the iPhone. The iPhone itself iPhone 12 standard, released last month, is a model with 4GB of RAM.

On the other hand, it is common for mid-range Android cell phone models to already have 6 GB, making them more popular. Galaxy A21s from Samsung are an example of this, although they also have models with 4 GB of RAM.

Still, the trend for the coming years is that models with 8 GB of RAM (third in the current report) will gradually become more popular. That is, from 2021 or 2022 we estimate that the 6 and 8 GB models will be among the most popular.

On the other hand, cell phones with more than 8 GB are still quite rare. 12 GB models, for example, represent only 2,1% of the cell phones surveyed.

Which storage capacity is most common?

When it comes to storage, the most common thing is to find models with 128 GB, which occupies 41,3% of the devices in the survey. Even so, this is one of the pieces of information that may be most out of touch with reality, since 128 GB models tend to be the most expensive among mid-range devices.

Next comes the 64 GB model, which tends to be the average across all current lines of devices. Although still present in a good fraction of devices, the 32 GB models are already showing signs of falling into disuse.

While I disagree with the dominance of 128GB models, I can agree that 64GB and 128GB models will continue to be the most popular for a few years to come. Especially when considering our market.

One of the few pieces of information that conflict with our perception is that 128GB is the most common storage

What is the most used version of Android?

AnTuTu's global preferences report has shown which versions of Android are most present on mobile phones. The presentation reveals a pattern that we already know in Android: unlike the iPhone, the most popular edition of the system is not the current one.

The most popular version is Android 10, the penultimate generation. It is followed by its predecessor, Android 9. Version 11 itself is not even mentioned in the report.

The previous edition of Android is still the most popular. Android 11 is far from that.

What can we conclude from these results?

In general, AnTuTu's research reflects well the patterns we also see in our market. Preference for larger screens, presence of Qualcomm processors and RAM memory agree with what we can see here.

The only data that conflicted with my market perception was storage, since 128GB is usually found among the most expensive models of mid-range smartphones. At least in Brazil, a device like the aforementioned Galaxy A21s with 128GB costs a little less than the Galaxy AXNUMXs itself. Galaxy S20 with the same storage.

It is worth mentioning that both were launched in the same year, but the S20 belongs to Samsung's main and premium line. Still, it is important to emphasize that the organization itself made it clear that the survey results may not reflect reality.
