Huawei P40
after several viscous, Huawei officially presented today (26/03) its new P40 line, with the P40, P40 Pro and P40 Pro+, all with cameras made in partnership with Leica. The look was already known, as were most of the specifications, but we have a lot to talk about the new devices.

But first, let's address the elephant in the room. As impressive as the hardware of the new models is, especially their cameras, Huawei's biggest problem continues to be the lack of Google apps, and the App Gallery doesn't solve the problem, as the company claims.

Huawei P40

The P40 features a 6,1-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels and a refresh rate of 60Hz. It has a triple camera setup, the first called ultra vision wide with 50 megapixels with a 1 / 1.28 "sensor (with f / 1.9 aperture), an 8 megapixel telephoto with image stabilization (with f / 2.4 aperture), as well as a 16 megapixel wide-angle (with f / 2.2 aperture).

The set also has a color temperature sensor. The front camera has 32 megapixels and can record 4K videos at 60 frames per second.

The processor is a Kirin 990 5G, and it has 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of capacity, with the possibility of expansion through an NM (Nano Memory) Card 2. The smartphone has protection against dust and splashes of water with IP53 certification. The battery has 3800 mAh with a charging speed of 22,5 watts. This version does not have wireless charging.

The P40 is 8,5mm thick and weighs 175 grams. It comes in silver, gold, blue, white and black.

Huawei P40 Pro

The P40 Pro features a 6,58-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1200 x 2640 pixels (a density of 441 dots per inch) and a refresh rate of 90Hz. The screen has four curved corners, with a fingerprint sensor that is 30% larger, and which also promises to be faster.

The cutout for the 32-megapixel front camera, which records 4K videos at 60 frames per second like the P40, but this one has automatic photography. It also has an infrared depth sensor to unlock the screen, providing greater security for payments. As sensors, the P40 Pro and P40 Pro+ rely on the use of gestures, such as using your hand to scroll the page or to capture the screen.

The quad camera has the same large 1/1.28″ sensor, with a 40-megapixel ultra-wide cine camera (f/1.8 aperture), the same ultra vision wide camera from the P40 (50 megapixels and f/1.9 aperture) with optical image stabilization. The ultra-wide camera has an ISO sensitivity of up to 51.200, and can practically see in the dark.

Completing the set is a 12-megapixel telephoto lens with 5x optical zoom and f/3.4 aperture, also with image stabilization, in addition to the color sensor and a ToF camera, which is the depth sensor.

The battery has 4200 mAh with 40-watt charging or 27-watt wireless charging. It is also waterproof and dustproof with IP68 certification. The P40 Pro has a model with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of capacity, also expandable with an NM Card 2.

P40 Pro model colors

The P40 Pro is 8,95mm thick and weighs 209 grams. It will be sold in the same colors as the P40.

Huawei P40 Pro +

Huawei P40 Pro +

The top-of-the-line smartphone is the P40 Pro+, which has the same 6,58-inch OLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate and rounded edges as the P40 Pro. As expected, its back is made of ceramic.

The biggest difference between the models is that the P40 Pro+ has a set of five cameras, so it has 10x optical zoom and 100x digital zoom. This digital zoom, at least judging by the images shown by Huawei in the presentation, is much sharper than that of the Galaxy S20 Ultra. Another possibility is to record videos with the super zoom.

The P40 Pro+'s setup consists of a 40-megapixel ultra-wide cine lens with f/1.9 aperture, an 8-megapixel super periscope telephoto lens with f/2.4 aperture, a 50-megapixel RYYB sensor, and an 8-megapixel optical periscope camera with f/2.4 aperture, the latter three with optical image stabilization. In addition, it also has the ToF sensor and the color temperature sensor.

A very interesting feature of the P40 Pro+ camera is the dual view video, which records videos in detail and wide angle at the same time. Another is the directional audio zoom, which uses the 3 microphones and an algorithm to zoom in the direction of the audio source.

Other features of the P40+ camera (also available on the P40) that we found quite impressive include AI Remove Passerby, which can remove people walking in the background of a photo, and AI Remove Reflection, which lets you remove reflections. In addition, Golden Snap takes a 4K video and recommends one to three images with the best moments chosen by AI.

The P40 Pro+ is 9mm thick and weighs 226 grams. Its ceramic back is scratch-resistant, and it has a matte finish that looks pretty cool.

It will be sold in black and white versions, with 8 GB of RAM and 512 GB of capacity (which can be expanded with an NM Card 2).

Software

To try to make up for Google's absence, Huawei has put a lot of effort into the software of its new devices, although the Play Store is still sorely missed.

The digital assistant Celia, in addition to responding to voice commands like the others, also identifies calories in a dish, finds out where to buy items, etc. We also like the control panel from which you can control several appliances in your home, as long as they are compatible.

MeeTime is an app for high-resolution video calls (1080p), which also works with other devices such as action cameras. This means you can share your smartphone screen during a call, as well as transfer a call from your smartphone and continue on the TV without having to hang up.

Huawei Share is a simple way to share files, just touch it to another compatible device to get started. Plus, you can connect your smartphone to your computer with a single tap. Likewise, just tap your speaker to share music, tap your Wi-Fi router to share a connection, and so on.

Other news

In addition to smartphones, the company also introduced the Huawei Sound X speaker, made in partnership with Devialet, with a dual woofer with 144 watts. Another novelty was a version of the Huawei Watch GT 2 in gold, as well as a sports version of the smartwatch, the Watch GT 2e.

Pricing and Availability

The P40 will cost 799 Euros (the equivalent of R$4380 at today's exchange rate) with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of capacity). The P40 Pro with 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of capacity will cost 999 Euros (or R$5479 at the conversion rate).
