Two major American tech brands have been locked in an intense battle for some time now: Facebook and Apple. The duel between the two has already yielded some episodes remarkable, reaching a new level with the new privacy policy applied in iOS 14 that affects the social network's business model. Today, some employees close to Zuckerberg secretly leaked an explosive speech of his against the Apple.
The barbs fired by the owner of Facebook date back to 2018 and were reported to The Wall Street Journal. At the time, the social network was involved in a scandal over the use of user data in the US election. Tim Cook, current CEO of Apple, was interviewed by the news program MSNBC and was asked about the case. Cook responded that his company would never go through this type of situation and criticized the way the competitor invades the privacy of its users. In response, Zuckerberg railed about the Apple: “we need to cause pain”.
The comment reveals a lot about how Facebook's CEO views his position in the market. It shows how this has a history. And, ultimately, it leads to an understanding of why FB invested so heavily in advertising in big printed newspapers of the USA. So, it was attacking the Apple for its update that gave users the option to choose whether or not they wanted their data to be tracked by apps.
Since the revelation about the angry speech came out today, Cook probably hasn't had time to respond yet (and may never get around to it). However, it's likely that the fight between Zuckerberg and Cook will Apple gain new chapters or that there is some movement on social networks.
