Xiaomi explains heat dissipation system in the Mi Mix Fold

April 15th 2021

Xiaomi recently announced the My Mix Fold, your first foldable smartphone, a segment in which there is a huge challenge related to heat dissipation.

A regular cell phone is basically a tablet, and the processor and battery, which produce the most heat, are always the same distance from the outside, where the heat is dissipated. A foldable phone can become a sandwich when closed, creating a layer between the heat production and the outside. When opened, the problem is different: the heat production and dissipation are asymmetrical, because the distribution of the components is not equal between the two parts, requiring more care on the side where the motherboard and chipset are positioned.

With this in mind, Xiaomi has created a special heat dissipation system for the Mi Mix Fold. The project involves a “micro airbag” structure, which can resist folding and works three-dimensionally on both sides, cooling the device. The advantage is that, despite the phone being divided into two parts, the dissipation model can work by connecting both sides.

To be resistant, Xiaomi built this airbag with layers, with the center composed of thermal gel and liquid cooling, and the two outer layers of the system made with graphite sheets, which can withstand the folds and heat.

In conventional cell phones, the larger the dissipation area, the easier it is to cool. Foldable smartphones have a very large area, but the fact that it is divided made it difficult to take advantage of all that size. With the connected system, Xiaomi managed to overcome this.

In total, the Mi Mix Fold has an 8,1-inch AMOLED screen when opened, as well as a 6,7-inch external display, all powered by the Snapdragon 888, which according to Xiaomi, made the heat dissipation system a major challenge. The smartphone goes on sale in China this Friday (16/04).
