WhatsApp tests feature to speed up audio messages

April 23th 2021

A new version of the application WhatsApp Beta has been released to Android users through the Play Store beta testing program. It includes a feature to accelerate audio playback speed.

With this new tool, you can play audio messages at three different speeds: 1x, 1,5x, and 2x. Accessing this feature is easy. When you receive an audio message in the updated beta version of WhatsApp, the message will come with the standard play button and another one at the end of the progress bar, which should initially be at 1x. By tapping this new button, you can change the speed at which the file is played.

However, the audio speed-up feature on WhatsApp is still limited. Even though the app is available in beta, you may not have been lucky enough to be part of the tool's testing group. The company should expand this feature to beta users in the coming days. For iOS users, the tool should also appear in beta in the coming weeks. It is not yet known when the company plans to release a finalized version of the tool for those using the app's regular model, but it is expected to reach all users in a few months.

If you can't wait to speed up audio messages on WhatsApp, the feature is already available on the competing app, Telegram. When you tap an audio message on it, a bar appears at the top of the conversation with a button to increase the speed by 2x.
