WhatsApp allows stores to manage their catalogs via the web

April 7th 2021

A WhatsApp update that goes live today allows companies to also manage their store catalog on the platform through WhatsApp web on desktop. The expansion of this function, which was limited to cell phones, can greatly facilitate inventory control by the business owner and the display of products to customers.

For example, a possible scenario to be visualized would be a person finding it easier to update their store's catalog on WhatsApp on a large computer screen. Perhaps even monitoring the inventory control of your products, which has been done on the same machine, in Excel or in specific programs.

WhatsApp stores will also be able to hide items

Another feature that should be released for WhatsApp Business users is the ability to hide an item from the store catalog and show it again when necessary. This feature allows, for example, a product to not be shown if the seller no longer has it in stock. When the store owner has the product available for sale again, they can “unhide” the item from the catalog of their business account on WhatsApp. This feature, at the time of writing, was not yet available for testing on a Business account, using an Android device and in a desktop environment here in Brazil.

According to the information about the new feature, the process to hide a product is simple. The person must go to Settings, Business Tools and Catalog. All items will be listed by the app, each one should have a three-dot icon, for more options. This is where the “hide” function will be located.

This feature can also be used in bulk. In other words, if it is necessary to hide several items from a catalog, the user can click on the first item and hold it until a green check mark appears. Then, all they need to do is tap on the other items that will be hidden and activate the function. The hidden items will remain accessible to the store owner, with a mark on the image also in the product details section, informing them that they are hidden. hidden.

WhatsApp as a commerce tool

Business via WhatsApp is expanding significantly, and today people can browse more than 8 million store catalogs on the platform. In Brazil, there are more than 1,75 million of these catalogs. The chat app is closely monitoring the trend of using its tools for commercial purposes. At the end of 2020, WhatsApp introduced the shopping cart functionality, allowing the customer to select multiple products and send the order as a single message to the company.

Among the important new features that are being planned for the chat app together with business accounts, we can mention a future banking transaction functionality through the platform, after the Central Bank release. Financial transactions may be made between customer accounts at the financial institutions where they are account holders using a debit or prepaid card under the Visa or Mastercard brands.

Given this, it is always important to pay attention to the next update to the messaging app's user data sharing policy with Facebook, which will take place next month. The app states that business accounts only will be affected by the new rules. In other words, information about stores in their WhatsApp accounts and the sale of items from their catalogs will possibly be included in Facebook's database.
