Have you heard of Dispo, the anti-Instagram where you “develop” photos?

March 10th, 2021

Posting photos with special filters, posing, making waves and waiting for likes is what drives Instagram users. Instagram, but not everyone is on that team… And for these people, Dispo, the anti-Instagram, was created. The person responsible for the new app, born in 2020 but still for a selective audience, is YouTuber David Dobrik.

Dispo, like Clubhouse, only accepts new users via invitation. Although it is not booming (yet), the app, available for download for iOS users only - as Clubhouse itself, in fact –, was the fourth most downloaded in the store Apple in February of this year. The value of the app is also sky-high and, according to Axios, is already close to US$ 200 million (more than R$ 1 billion).

Why “anti-Instagram”?

The Device has been labeled by the folks at BuzzFeed of “anti-Instagram”, and the explanation for the nickname can be understood through the words of the creator of the application himself, David Dobrik. In a recent interview for The New York Times, the YouTuber commented on how the idea for the app came about and what its main purpose is. “When I would go to parties with my friends, they would have disposable cameras all over the house, and they would invite people to take pictures at night. In the morning, they would take all the cameras, look at the film and say: 'What happened last night?'”.

And this idea of only looking at photos after a certain amount of time is what piques users' curiosity and drives Dispo. Just like on Instagram, users can take as many photos as they want using Dispo. However, the only similarity between them is this. On Dispo, all photos taken take on a retro look, like that found on old, disposable cameras (hence the name of the app; by the way, does anyone remember these cameras?). In addition, the user is not offered options for filters, editing or captions. What's more, the images posted can only be seen at 9 am the day after the photo was taken, bringing back memories of the parties that David, the creator of the app, mentioned.

David Dobrik has made a big bet that, without the immediacy of Instagram Stories, users could record moments of enjoyment in the same way, but without worrying about how they came out in the photo. The creator of Dispo believes that the app he created could be a “healthier and more organic option for the public”, and that users could learn to “live in the moment”, and not care about what others think about it.
