Uber Pets Shows Off Cars That Can Take Your Pet for a Walk (in the US)

Ride-sharing company Uber has launched a new service in the US, Uber Pets, which allows passengers to directly call a driver who is willing to take pets in their car. This new option Uber must charge an extra fee to take the owner and their pet to the chosen destination.

The Uber Pets option appears directly on the ride-sharing app's interface. The option will depend on whether there are drivers willing to take pets nearby. It is worth noting that pets can only travel when accompanied by a human.

By pets, it’s fair to assume that Uber drivers who accept this ride option are expecting dogs and cats, properly restrained on a leash or in a carrier. For those who need to take, say, their pet snake to the vet, it’s still a good idea to contact the driver to avoid any last-minute hassles. Uber also advises owners to bring a sheet or blanket with them on the ride to avoid making a mess in the driver’s car.

Seat belt adapter is recommended

Another important tip for those who have larger animals is to buy a seat belt adapter for a leash. In the event of an accident, a large dog left loose in the backseat could seriously injure other passengers and the driver. Uber also makes it clear that pets are not covered by its personal and vehicle accident insurance terms.

In Brazil, the Uber Pets option is not yet available. Anyone who wants to transport their pets in an Uber today need to talk first with the driver, clearly specifying the size of the pet, to find out whether he or she will accept the trip or not. According to Uber's policies, service animals, trained to assist people with disabilities, can travel in any vehicle registered with the company.
