Twitter users in Russia saw their connection speeds drop dramatically on Wednesday (10/03). This happened because Roskomnadzor, the Kremlin's communications oversight department, announced that it will restrict the platform's connections in the country.
The announcement comes weeks after Twitter was notified to remove videos, images and posts deemed inappropriate by the Russian government. According to the Russian government, the platform would not have made an effort to delete thousands of posts involving suicide, drug use and pedophilia made by users since 2017.
Twitter, on the other hand, denies the accusation and considers the decision political, since the social network is the main tool for disseminating the thoughts of Alexei Navalny, Vladimir Putin's main opponent in Russia.
According to Roskomnadzor, the drop in Twitter's connection speed will affect all smartphones in the country and approximately 50% of non-mobile devices across Russia.
In an official statement on its website, the security department states that “if (Twitter) continues to ignore the requirements of the law, enforcement measures will continue in accordance with the response regulations (up to blocking)”. Despite the incident, Twitter has not publicly commented on the case to date.
Zero tolerance
Twitter is not the only platform that has been targeted by Russian authorities. In addition to the microblogging network, other Big Techs such as Google, Facebook and TikTok are being processed by legal authorities under the claim that they had not contained publications calling on underage youth to attend protests.
In early March, in fact, the local social network Odnoklassniki, from the developer Mail.ru was fined 4 million rubles, approximately R$3,1 million for the same allegation.
