After, among others, adopt wind energy at its headquarters, the Google has made a new statement about sustainability. This time, it's about the use of plastics and other agents that help harm the environment.
Last year, Google made a promise to include recycled materials in all of its products by 2022. According to the company, this goal has already been achieved and all new products, the Pixel and Nest, include recycled materials in their designs.
In light of this success, Google has announced some new sustainability goals for the coming years.
Google's Sustainability Goals
The list of commitments begins with an update to its previous goal. With it, the company promises to use at least 50% recycled or renewable plastics in all new hardware by 2025.
Next, it commits to achieving UL ECVP 2799 Zero Waste. This certification is from UL (Underwriters Laboratories, an organization that is a global reference in sustainability testing). It states that certified companies treat at least 80% of their waste. That is, they do not send it to landfills.
The promise is that this goal will be achieved at all manufacturing and assembly sites. Google final certified sustainability by the year 2022.
In addition to the new equipment made from non-recycled plastic, Google also promises to commit to non-plastic packaging by 2025. The multinational says it has been reducing its use of plastic in packaging since 2016, but research suggests that achieving 100% recyclability in products and still protecting them during transportation will be difficult.
Google, whose slogan was “Do No Harm,” is good to see the giant making a solid commitment to sustainability. If achieved, a goal like this will have an impact on both the environment and setting an example for the entire industry.
