Steve Jobs to be honored in Trump's 'Garden of National Heroes'
According to one executive order signed on Monday, Steve Jobs, among hundreds of other public figures, is to receive a statue in the “Garden of National Heroes”. The garden is a project of Donald Trump which aims to pay homage to the “legends of America’s past.”
Other personalities who should have statues in the monument with the co-founder of Apple include Emily Dickinson, Walt Disney, Aretha Franklin, Kobe Bryant, Miles Davis, Rosa Parks, Nikola Tesla, Martin Luther King Jr., and Hannah Arendt.
The order reads: “Each individual was chosen because he embodied the American spirit of daring and defiance, excellence and adventure, courage and trust, loyalty and love. Astounding the world by the sheer force of his example, each contributed indispensably to America’s noble history, the finest chapters of which are yet to come.”
Trump previously spoke about the idea in a speech at Mount Rushmore in South Dakota. The garden would be a response to protests calling for the removal of statues of Confederate soldiers, slave-owning figures and other controversial monuments in the US. “This is our response to the attempt to erase our heroes, values and way of life. In its place, the current devastation and discord will be overcome with love of country and patriotism,” the order says. In the document, Trump even compares graffiti on Confederate monuments to the September 11, 2001 attacks.
After his inauguration, which takes place tomorrow (20/01), President-elect Joe Biden has promised to reverse several of Trump's policies, so the statue of Jobs and even the “Garden of National Heroes” itself are unlikely to ever come to fruition.
