Spotify buys Podz to make podcast searches easier

June 18th, 2021

Yesterday (17/06), Spotify announced the acquisition of the company specialized in podcast discovery, Podz. The startup uses artificial intelligence that allows users to access excerpts of the best moments of searched podcasts, like a kind of trailer. Spotify's announcement was made through a release in its newsroom, where the company says listeners will begin to see the implementation of tools integrated with Podz technology later this year.

Highlighting the Podz technology, Spotify revealed that it will make it easier to find content: “This capability, combined with Spotify’s 2,6 million podcasts on the platform, learnings from our work in music discovery, and current investments in podcast recommendation, will take podcast discovery to the next level – making it easier for listeners to find the content they want to listen to, and for creators to get discovered and build a fan base.”

Showing enthusiasm for the new acquisition, Spotify also highlights that the implementation will bring greater incentive to podcast creators within the platform. “We believe that Podz’s technology will complement and accelerate Spotify’s focused efforts to drive discovery, deliver listeners the right content at the right time, and accelerate category growth around the world,” Spotify said.

Dispute with the Apple

This new acquisition is a major strengthening of Spotify in the podcast market, as its competitor Apple is updating its platform, recently launching subscription to programs and channels. In this new update, the Apple will have a 30% commission rate for each subscription the channel receives. Already in its service of signature, Spotify will receive a 5% fee for each subscriber.

It is worth remembering that confirming previous rumors, recently, the most popular music streaming platform also launched the green room, an audio platform similar to Clubhouse.
