Snapchat has more users on Android than iOS

April 23th 2021

When the Snapchat was released in the distant year of 2012 and was a application Exclusive to iOS, about a year later, the app has finally become available for Android. Now, the company has revealed that it has more users on devices with Google's operating system.

It is true that Snapchat is not in its best days of popularity, but even so, the social network reached 280 million active users in the first half of 2021. In the report released by companhia, Snapchat CEO Evan Spiegel praised the fact that the brand has managed to gain a solid foothold on a platform where it didn’t originally launch. “This is a critical milestone that reflects the long-term value of the investment we’ve made to rebuild our Android app,” he explained.

The comment refers to the fact that, in addition to taking a long time to come out on Android, the first versions of Snapchat on Google's OS suffered from limitations when compared to those on the iPhone. It was only in 2019 that a global version of the service was launched. Spiegel also highlights in the report the brand's efforts to popularize itself in other markets around the world where Android is relevant. The example cited is in India, where the company recently held a major event.

Even with the numbers presented and the success on Android, Snapchat lost a good part of the social media market after its main functions (filters and self-destructing media) were incorporated into other platforms, mainly Instagram. Despite this, to this day there are still new apps launched only for one platform. The recent Clubhouse is an example of this. The audio-focused social network is only available for iOS and an Android version is not expected to arrive any time soon.
