Snap Inc. Unveils New AR Spectacles and Retail Solutions

Just like expected, Snap Inc. announced today (20/05) the new generation of its augmented reality glasses, focused on developers and not the general consumer market. In other words, the new Spectacles are aimed at creators to work and develop new AR experiences, combining fun and utility, according to the company.

The device weighs 134 grams and features two 3D guide displays, 2 nits of brightness, and support for Snapchat's AR immersive lenses. Additionally, the new Spectacles glasses bring two RGB cameras and four microphones.

With the new Spectacles, Snapchat also announced new features such as allowing brands to establish a permanent presence on the platform to showcase their Lenses, Highlights and Stories. Brands can also enable browsing, trying out and purchasing through Shops, transforming Snapchat into a new point of sale. Other new features are aimed at content creators editing videos, following a line that can be interpreted as a reaction to popular short-form video platforms such as TikTok and Instagram Reels.

For creators and developers, were presented scanning tools and camera shortcuts, as well as updates to Lens Studio aimed at innovative solutions in, among other things, gaming and education. Snap Inc. also introduced new products and partnerships, bringing map layers that allow local content and information to be displayed on top of the Map in scenes. The company's focus on maps was the subject of a recent post, when Snap Inc. bought 3D mapping company Pixel8earth. Other announcements included camera kits and stickers, games and Mini, the real-time shopping event experiences that Snapchat users can host with their friends.

Spectacles 3 charging case

The glasses Spectacles 3 cost $380 (about R$2.005, excluding taxes or fees), in mineral brown and carbon black, and come with a charging case that can charge fully in up to 75 minutes. It also comes with a USB-C cable, a lens cleaning wipe, and a 3D viewfinder. The new glasses support Bluetooth 5.0, Wi-Fi 802.11, and are compatible with iPhone 7 or later, running iOS 11 or later.
