Samsung Shows Off Rollable Display and Z-Foldable Display Concepts

November 27th, 2020

Samsung is one of the pioneers of foldable screens for smartphones, but it could go further, with a Z-folding phone and another with a rollable screen. None of this is confirmed, but in two posts On Samsung Display's blog in its home country, the company pointed to these two paths.

Yes, the possibility of a smartphone shaped like the letter Z is something we we already know It's been at least six months, but a rollable screen would be a nice novelty. I personally really like both formats, and I would have both a device with a Z-folding screen and one with a rollable screen, especially the latter.

This would be exciting news for the company's upcoming foldable devices, but there's no point getting too excited, at least for now. As I said, no information about these products has been confirmed, as well as the very existence of these projects.

The only bet I can make is on the smartphone with two folds. If we consider the patent application for the Z-screen, and this new clue from Samsung, we can conclude that we will indeed have a new model of foldable smartphone on the market in the not too distant future.

Other lines of foldable smartphones

In addition to investing in research and development of new products with foldable screens, Samsung is also preparing to reinforce its current portfolio in 2021, which could even decree the end of the line for the beloved Note line, although this does not mean the end of the use of the S Pen in the company's smartphones.

The company will launch the Z Flip 2 next year, which may have a 120Hz refresh rate screen. This will be the second generation of the Flip line introduced this year. The Galaxy Flip is an evolution of the Galaxy Fold, although both lines are maintained by Samsung.

About the original line of foldables, which has the company pioneer in this market and also the latest (and very expensive) Galaxy Z Fold 2, there are many expectations regarding the new heir. The Galaxy Z Fold 3, which is also expected to arrive next year, may feature a slide-out physical keyboard, something that is also shown in Samsung's materials.

An exciting future for those who love foldable screens

I sincerely hope that both the Samsung smartphone with a 2-folding screen and the one with a rollable screen become a reality. However, that's not the most important thing. For me, the most interesting thing is to see that Samsung is betting on different paths.

The variety of foldable products offers more options for consumers, but there is still the issue of price. Now we can only hope that these smartphones will come down, but we know that the company is also thinking about it.
