Samsung DeX works wirelessly on PC, but only if you have a Galaxy S21

Samsung's system for "turning your phone (or tablet) into a computer" has received an update. Dex allows Samsung devices to wirelessly sync with any smart screen or PC – as long as they are from Samsung. Galaxy S21 line. The company has not announced whether other previously compatible devices will receive wireless integration.

Users who want to test the new functionality should update the DeX client for PC or Mac. Once this is done, click on the mobile app and select the DeX function on the Computer. If successful, the screen will display the devices available for synchronization. It is worth noting that the wireless connection will not work if “Link to Windows” is enabled.

The new wireless integration works exactly as it has been working so far, allowing you to access files on the larger screen. However, the mode does have some latency issues, although much lower than with a Smart TV. Still, wireless DeX is not recommended, for example, for those who want to project smartphone games onto their PC. Too bad for gamers in South Korea, for example, who could rent the Galaxy S21 to test League of Legends.

Additionally, the app also has some compatibility issues with the S Pen on the computer. Users who open Samsung Notes to take notes by hand will find that the digital pen will not write anything. This is because DeX continues to prioritize the mouse for this activity.

Samsung's Promise

Since 2017, Samsung has included DeX as standard on its smartphones and tablets. However, it came to the market requiring a dock (DeX Station or DeX Pad) and an HDMI cable. As a result, users traded high performance for limited usability, since the smartphone or tablet needed a cable connection.

The company tried to remedy this with its own HDMI cable for the program, which reduced the clutter but didn't completely solve the problem. Today, DeX works with Samsung's own USB Type-C cables.

Since the update to One UI 2.5, the devices have been working wirelessly, but only with compatible TVs and monitors, which could discourage some users. The expectation was that One UI 3.1 would change this scenario, but so far, other Samsung devices still cannot use DeX wirelessly.
