June 17th, 2021

A recent report by International Data Corporation (IDC) indicated that the smartphone market with 5G technology should grow 130% by the end of 2021, but, this Thursday (17), numbers released by the consultancy Strategy Analytics were a little less optimistic. At least regarding projections involving the 5G iPhone market.

According to the report available on the official website of the market consultancy, sales of 5G iPhones suffered a considerable drop when comparing the 4th quarter of last year with the 1st quarter of 2021. In global terms, sales of 5G iPhones fell by 23% – from 52,2 million, in the period from October to December last year, to 40,7 million, registered between the months of January and March. In pure numbers, this represents a drop of 11,5 million units.

Strategy Analytics also reported that sales of 5G smartphones, in general, increased by 6% in the period, totaling 136 million units and confirming IDC's projection. The consultancy also gave the possible path that the market took to absorb the retraction in relation to iPhones. According to the analysis, brands such as Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi and Samsung were responsible for “stealing” the 23% of the segment that was previously in the hands of Apple.

Samsung led growth

The South Korean company, in fact, led the growth in sales of 5G smartphones in the market during the 1st quarter, which explains the drop in Apple in the period. It sold 17 million units, which represented a growth of 79% compared to the previous period. The performance was thanks to sales of the Galaxy S21, which held 12,5% of overall sales, exploding mainly in South Korea, North America and Europe. Behind Samsung came Vivo, with 62% growth between the quarters, driven by the iQOO U3 5G.

Another highlight of the report was Oppo. The Chinese brand, just like Xiaomi, sold well in its homeland and registered a 55% increase compared to the last quarter of last year. The 5G iPhones, despite the overall drop in Apple, also remain well positioned in the market, with 40,4 million units sold of its latest flagship, the iPhone 12.
