Qualcomm joins forces with other companies to accelerate production of wearables

Present in many devices In the mobile industry, processor manufacturer Qualcomm will increase its investment in the wearables area, expanding its Snapdragon platform. The company seeks to accelerate production in the segment of fitness trackers, smartwatches, headphones and the like.

To promote the adoption of the Snapdragon platform among wearables vendors, the program was created Qualcomm Wearables Ecosystem Accelerator. The objective of this program, according to the manufacturer, is to accelerate the adoption of wearables and reduce development time by building collaborative relationships across the product value chain. The focus is on device manufacturers, service providers, platform providers, and independent hardware and software vendors.

Qualcomm plans to invest in new Snapdragon Wear platforms to serve these different categories of wearables, including multiple operating systems, a variety of software versions and reference designs. The more than 60 companies involved include Arm, BBK, Fossil, Oppo, Verizon, Vodafone and Zebra.

New platforms emerging in 2022

For the manufacturer, the wearables segment has been growing at a fast pace, with products aimed at all markets and consumers, including corporate use cases and those targeting children, teenagers, adults and seniors. As a result, new Snapdragon Wear platforms should emerge to serve these different categories of wearables, including multiple operating systems, a variety of software versions and reference designs.

“We are significantly increasing our investments in silicon, platforms and cutting-edge technologies, and we plan to launch new Snapdragon Wear platforms across all segments in the coming year to deliver on our long-term vision,” said Pankaj Kedia, senior director and global head of smart wearables at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. According to market analyst firm International Data Corporation (IDC), the wearables market grew 21% year-over-year and is set to grow further. IDC research manager Jitesh Ubrani adds that the smartwatch segment “is moving well beyond health and fitness tracking, expanding into both consumer and enterprise segments, and further fueling the category’s growth.”
