Project allows Pebble watch, discontinued in 2016, to become Android Watch

Pebble smartwatches were the precursors of modern smartwatches at the beginning of the last decade. Despite their relative success, their lifespan was short-lived and they were discontinued in 2016. But, fans of the watch started a project called Rebble and released an app that makes the Pebble watch run like an Android Watch.

Called Sideload Helper by Rebble, the app allows users to transfer files from their smartwatch to a smartphone's Android environment for editing and then returning to the watch. On the project's official website, the developers pointed out that it is possible to transfer files in pwb (watchface/watchapp), pbl (language) and pbz (firmware) formats. The app also provides a link to the Rebble app store. This feature was released shortly before the company behind the smartwatch closed its doors, but it had problems reading the Android code.

With this app, users who are most attached to the old Pebble will be able to breathe new life into the device, which will run in a similar way to an Android Watch. However, the developers' plans are for Sideload Helper to assist in the transition to a dedicated app that will run on the watch, allowing it to be updated to modern times.

The app, however, still has its limitations regarding the language of use. However, the Rebble project's developer community has plans to translate the app so that it can have a wider reach.
