Photoshop Camera released for iOS and Android

June 11th, 2020

After being launched in November last year in a test version for a select few, the Photoshop Camera app has finally reached all users. Camera was released in versions for Android and iOS, but on Android, unfortunately, only some newer smartphones are supported.

80 lenses available

The app has around 80 custom filters with colors and textures to transform your photos into montages worthy of Photoshop for Windows and Mac. Photoshop Camera has a magic wand that automatically adjusts the photo, with results that vary greatly. Despite this, its purpose and function are completely different from the desktop app.

The main idea here is to be a simple app that anyone can use to get great results, even if they have no experience with Photoshop or image editing programs. The app works with filters with effects, called lenses by Adobe, which show their results in real time.

Each filter has different looks that can be accessed by swiping your finger to the side. Some of them add textures, drawings or geometric figures to the images, while others play with double exposure. In addition, there are others that seem simpler and change the hue, saturation and contrast of the photos or videos, but they also work very well.

All of the lenses are very well thought out and are almost always very fun. In addition to working when taking the photo, each photo can be edited to see how it would look with one of the other lenses. The app is completely free to use, but it is clear that Adobe's goal is to get more people to sign up to its ecosystem and perhaps become customers of its suite of applications.

Tailor-made to be shared

Adobe wants app users to share their creations on social media, and Photoshop Camera has buttons to replicate your content on the Instagram or Facebook feed or stories, as well as send a message or WhatsApp and post in Lightroom.

In the app descriptions on Google Play and the App Store, Adobe asks users to use the hashtag #photoshopcamera when sharing photos and videos, to help spread the use of the app.

Custom filters for events and locations

According to one declaration From an Adobe executive to The Verge, the company doesn't see itself as a competitor to apps like Instagram and Snapchat, which have several interesting filters, including many made by their communities.

This actually makes sense, as Photoshop Camera is yet another competitor to Art Transfer from Google, and social networks are more its partners. An example of this is the hint he gave that Camera may be integrated with other apps in the future.

Another idea for the coming months and years is to launch lenses that can be a source of revenue for events, festivals or special venues. This is something that certainly has the potential to attract both consumers and developers. One example of this is already available in the app, the custom filter created in partnership with singer Billie Eilish.
