What's coming to Twitter Blue, the paid version of the social network? Find out what's new

28 May 2021

Twitter Blue, the paid version of the social network, has been released for some selected users to test, although it has not yet been officially launched. But after all, what will be different about the new feature of the famous social network, to the point that it is worth paying a monthly fee?

Firstly, it is necessary to record that the researcher Jane Manchun Wong posted a few hours ago on the social network that she had the honor of being the first person to pay for Twitter Blue. She paid 3 dollars and, if we were to put it in Brazilian currency, it would be around R$16.

Change colors, Reader Mode, undo tweets and collections

The paid version will provide the option to change the social network's theme and icon colors. According to the images, there are six theme colors and eight icon colors available for subscribers to choose from. There will also be a Reader Mode and the ability to undo (or edit) tweets (which is not simply deleting a tweet, as is possible today).

Another new feature that comes with the paid version (and that appears in the tweet that the analyst made last week and linked to the current post) is the possibility of separating publications by tags and collections. Just remember that this feature already exists for free on Tweetdeck, which belongs to Twitter. In other words, there is nothing stopping something in this situation from changing, such as, for example, Tweetdeck becoming paid, a change that would be in line with the speculations posted in February.

Wong's post shouldn't be something to ignore. Quite the contrary. The technology blogger is a very strong name when it comes to news on Twitter. In fact, when the paid version of the social network gained even more momentum last week, the researcher was central to the information. Not to mention when she anticipated that Twitter was about to launch a way to payments to creators of content, or when Wong informed about the return of the system of verification requested by the user.

In fact, the analyst has just highlighted the new features on the social network, with the new reactions “Like”, “Hope”, “Hmm”, “Sad” and “Haha”. The icons for happy and sad reactions are VIP and will be shown as the generic heart at the moment.

There may still be ads…

It is true that Twitter is studying alternative forms of monetization, reducing the influence of the amount it earns from ads, the main source of revenue for the social network. Regarding ads, there is no confirmation that they will leave the timeline of users who pay to use Twitter. Thus, the impression is that, even if they pay a subscription, the person will see various advertisements on their cell phone screen while browsing Twitter Blue. It is worth remembering that the social network of the little blue bird recently asked to their users on iOS so they can continue tracking their data.

In conclusion, it is not very clear in which countries Twitter Blue will be available at this first moment (there is information that, on the Japanese App Store, the news has already appeared). In addition, Twitter did not want to confirm to the BBC what was seen in Wong's tweets about the features of the paid version. Finally, there are possibilities that the company will include other subscription services and other ways to offer individuals and companies access to special features on the platform.
