In a official announcement, WhatsApp also provided important information about what will happen when the updated Terms of Service and Privacy Policy come into effect. In this post, the app reaffirms that it is extending the update to May 15th to give everyone more time to understand the changes.
So, it’s not an immediate deletion. People will be able to accept the update after the deadline, but they will be subject to the app’s inactive user policy, where accounts are typically deleted after 120 days of inactivity. After May 15, those who don’t accept WhatsApp’s update will not be able to use some of the app’s features, and for a short period, they will still be able to receive calls and notifications, but they won’t be able to read or send messages.
Until May 15, users will be able to export their chat history on Android or iPhone and download a report of their account data. There is also the possibility of deleting the WhatsApp account on Android, iPhone or KaiOS. However, this action is irreversible, because it will erase the entire message history, remove the person from all groups in which they are a member and delete the app's backups.
What is the problem?
WhatsApp already shares some information with Facebook since 2016. Metadata such as user phone numbers and device information has been shared between networks for approximately five years. The next update will allow Facebook and WhatsApp to also share data on financial transactions, such as payments and transactions.
According to WhatsApp, the new privacy policy will only affect the content of messages sent to companies, which may be stored on Facebook servers. The explanation given is that this strategy will allow better targeting of advertising services that the platforms offer.
Given the fears of many WhatsApp users, many are considering not accepting this update, as they fear that their private messages will be shared with Facebook.
