Nokia claims to have broken 5G speed record with 4,5Gbps connection

Nokia said it has broken a 5G speed record with a 4,5 gigabits per second (Gbps) connection using Turkey's Turk Telecom infrastructure using 26 GHz mmWave spectrum. This is the second record the Finnish company says it has achieved, after claiming 2020 Gbps speeds with Finland's Elisa in November 8. The difference is that in the test with Elisa, two Qualcomm reference smartphones with 4 Gbps each were used, and now, a single device.

According to release, Nokia achieved a new 5G speed record by testing the connection through a technology called “5G NR” (5G New Radio), with a proprietary AirScale base connected to a smartphone that transferred data through the Turk Telecom network in Ankara, the capital of Turkey.

“Despite the launch of commercial 5G in several countries, 5G trials still play an important role in developing faster and better networks,” said Tommi Uitto, President of Mobile Networks at Nokia. “This record speed, achieved together with our long-time partner, shows that we are constantly refining and improving our 5G network buildout, and this is thanks to the nearly 200 5G trials, operational networks and wireless technology deliveries we have completed worldwide.”

Claiming to have achieved a record speed for 5G (or any other internet connection, to be honest) is something that almost every operator does. The problem is assessing the veracity of the information provided, considering that each company conducts its tests in specifically controlled environments.

Who has been following the Vida Celular must remember the day where Samsung made the same claim, but with higher numbers. The speed achieved by a Galaxy S20+ was 5,23 Gbps, using E-UTRAN New Radio Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) technology, which allows mobile operators to increase speeds 5G taking advantage of a 4G network – that is, the connection was a hybrid point between these two generations of speed, and not necessarily a “full 5G”.
