the french website iPhone Soft spoke to a high-ranking Netflix employee. He revealed that the streaming company would be working on offering a feature audio high-performance spatial sound for users who use AirPods Pro and other devices da Apple. The novelty would be applied, at first, in a small part of the catalog from Netflix, and also to a minority of users of the streaming service.
According to information obtained by the French publication, users who want to test spatial sound soon while watching Netflix content will need to have at least AirPods Pro or AirPods Max, an iPhone 7, an iPad Air 3, an iPad 6, an iPad Mini 5 or an iPad Pro. Whatever the device, it will need to be running the iOS 14 or iPadOS 14 operating system.
What is spatial sound?
It sounds like something out of The Jetsons, but “spatial” is about spatial awareness. The feature is built into the AirPods Pro and AirPods Max, to give users of the headphones Apple an effect similar to that found in movie theaters, also called three-dimensional or dynamic 3D. It is an experience that aims to “reproduce sounds virtually anywhere in space, creating an immersive sound experience,” says Apple, in a statement.
Spatial audio uses the gyroscope and accelerometer in AirPods Pro and iPhone (or iPad) to map the user’s head movements and transform the sound range into 360º. This way, the user has the sensation that sounds are coming from all directions, just like in the cinema. “Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking brings the cinema experience directly to your AirPods Pro”, adds Apple.
By its very nature, there is no way to implement such a system directly on TVs, only on TWS headphones. The spatial sound feature that Netflix intends to incorporate into the AirPods Pro catalog is already supported by other streaming services such as Apple TV+, Hulu and Disney Plus.
It is worth remembering, however, that one of the unique services recently offered by Netflix, Dolby Atmos, was restricted to users who subscribe to the company's Ultra HD package. Will spatial sound really be that exclusive? We'll just have to wait and see...
