O deadline given by the United States government for the sale of the Chinese application TikTok ended last Friday (4) and no new extension should be granted. Even so, the social network should remain operating in the country, at least until further notice.
According to Bloomberg, the government is unlikely to enforce the ban or issue a fine to the platform for now, as ByteDance, owner of TikTok, is still negotiating with authorities.
President Donald Trump signed an order in August making the app's continued presence in the country conditional on its sale to an American company. At the time, he said the service was “a threat to the United States”. The first deadline, of 90 days, ended on November 12, but was extended until the beginning of this month.
Unstable situation
During the period, the Supreme Court blocked the US Department of Commerce from halting financial transactions involving TikTok in October. Subsequently, other injunctions favorable to the app were also granted in regional courts.
Still on time, TikTok, Walmart and Oracle Announce TikTok Global, the company that would be responsible for operating the service in the United States, a kind of partial sale of the platform. “After the creation of TikTok Global, Oracle/Walmart will make its investment and the shares of TikTok Global will be distributed to its owners. The Americans will be the majority and ByteDance will not have any properties in TikTok Global,” the company highlighted at the time.
Despite this, the Trump administration was not convinced by the proposal and said that control of the app would remain with China. Since then, new agreements have been discussed, but nothing has yet been agreed between the Chinese and the United States.
Bloomberg further states that Donald Trump now intends to speed up negotiations, as President-elect Joe Biden takes office in January and his stance on Chinese companies in the United States remains unclear. For now, the app, which has more than 100 million users in the US and 700 million worldwide, remains available in the country.
