Google Meet now has a data control mode that doubles as a battery consumption optimizer during video calls, according to the official blog from Google. The update comes as a complement to some features that were recently announced, with which the application gained support for animated backgrounds, among other new features.
According to the post, the video calling app now has a new option in its settings menu – “Limit Data Usage” – which can be activated with a tap. From there, Google Meet will not only save the data used for the call, but will also bring two bonuses: helping to conserve battery life and freeing up your smartphone’s memory and processing power, making it respond (a little) faster.

It is worth remembering, however, that this new feature is valid exclusively for the dedicated Google Meet app, and data control and other benefits will not be implemented if you access your meeting through the Gmail interface, in your browser.
According to Google, the new mode was implemented today and its full availability should be finalized in the next few days. The Mountain View company emphasizes that the option is disabled by default, requiring you to always activate it before making a new call.
This won't be the last new feature from Google Meet, it's worth mentioning: in addition to data control, the company led by Sundar Pichai promised to keep calls unlimited until the end of June this year. While “unlimited” in this case is different from “infinite” (the ultimate limit is 24 hours of meeting duration), it is certainly beneficial to the entire base, since free users (those who did not subscribe to Google Workspace) would have to settle for 60 minutes of free duration.
