Gboard would be showing capabilities to change the color palette from the system's background image, that is, the wallpaper. In order to work, GBoard needs to be configured to apply the default system theme, which is when it adapts from Android's light or dark mode. However, in Android 12, when this same option is selected, the variety of colors is almost infinite and always based on this background image. There seems to be a trigger for this new mechanism to work only in the next version of the operating system.
Google has yet to comment on the news involving new GBoard themes based on the smartphone's background image. Perhaps it is saving this revelation for I/O, or for the official launch of Android 12, in the second half of the year.
