Cold weather ruins Samsung's foldable screens in South Korea

Galaxy Fold and Galaxy z flip reported serious damage to the foldable screens of the devices after a cold wave in Seoul, South Korea. This Friday (08/01), temperatures in the South Korean capital reached -18º C. Apparently, the two users tried to open the screens of the devices in the cold weather, which would have caused the damage.

Images of the damaged screens were shared on the website Sam's Mobile. From the photos, it is possible to consider that other factors led to the cracks in the displays, although both users attribute the damage to low temperatures. Both images were posted on local forums, DC Inside e Meeco.

This isn't the first time Samsung users have noticed the frame of their foldable displays wobbling due to the cold. A month ago, another customer reported a similar issue with the Z Flip on a Reddit forum. Also last year, an Input journalist described how a Motorola Razr had the fold area delaminated after being transported in the cold.

Winter susceptibility

Foldable screens are known to be more sensitive to low temperatures than traditional screens. This is because, in a low-heat environment, the materials that make up the smartphone undergo a contraction process. Therefore, lighter foldable screens tend to deform more easily than flat, rigid displays.

Both the Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Galaxy Z Flip come with a UTG (Ultra-Thin Glass) panel that makes them more resistant to low temperatures. The Galaxy Fold's casing, however, is not made of the same material.

Samsung has not yet communicated whether the damage to the foldable screens was caused by the cold or misuse by users.
