Facebook will restrict ad targeting for underage users. According to the company, the measure applies to both the social network and Instagram. With the change, advertisers do FB They will only be able to segment audiences by age groups over 18, in addition to gender or location.

The social network's justification is that the new terms of use aim to protect its minor users, since they do not have the same discernment as adults to make decisions, nor can they decide whether or not they want to be tracked by third-party applications.

The decision the company is referring to is the one offered by iOS based on the new iPhone privacy policies, in which iPhone owners decide the permission levels for each installed application. In the case of underage users, these permissions are tied to the permission of the guardian.

It is worth mentioning that, last year, it was found that the social network's advertising control had flaws that allowed the creation of advertisements for medicines for minors. These products would be used in conjunction with alcoholic beverages at parties.

Minors will have private accounts by default on Facebook

According to Facebook, in addition to restricting ads, users under the age of 16 will now have a private account by default, where only friends can view the published content. Despite this, they will still have the option to change visibility in the user settings.

Facebook also announced that it is working on a new version of the Instagram app with an experience focused on teenagers. The proposal is a response to the growth of TikTok andamong the younger generations who are no longer as interested in the platforms of Mark Zuckerberg's conglomerate.

Furthermore, Facebook's focus on underage users has been a source of criticism and concern among Americans. Earlier this year, nearly 40 U.S. attorneys general spoke out against the creation of a children's version of Instagram.
