US revokes order banning TikTok and WeChat

June 10th, 2021

In the real cold war between China and the administration of former US President Donald Trump, it wasn't just Huawei who suffered: TikTok and WeChat suffered one try of banning at a time when at least the viral video network was significantly increasing its popularity in the Americas. The claim was that the operation of these services put the security of citizens' data at risk.

When this was announced, Microsoft, Oracle, Walmart and others began bidding to acquire a large part of ByteDance's business in the Americas, owner of the app popular for its choreographed dances. This, according to the former US management, would ease their concerns, since an American company would be directly involved in the platform's operations. As Donald Trump left power after a turbulent election, talks cooled due to the possibility of Joe Biden undoing this order. And that is exactly what happened.

Ban order was never implemented

The President of the United States has revoked the order banning TikTok and WeChat in the country. What has changed? Nothing, because it had not yet come into effect. It was more of an internal concern for the companies involved. However, with the matter settled, concern has grown in the country about interference by internal agents through apps, which is why the United States is reinforcing the Commerce Department's protocols to comprehensively monitor the software market there.

Huawei? No updates on this topic yet. Although some restrictions have been loosened for Honor, this other Chinese company still works with strict market restrictions, not being able to use Android, for example. This is why it launched the HarmonyOS, but the difficulties in selling its products outside the Asian market have led it to invest more in wearables. The company recently confessed that the P50 will be delayed due to the sanctions suffered.
