Discord has announced that it will be relaxing its rules for NSFW (unsuitable for under-18s) servers on iOS. According to the company, the block that previously affected any content suitable for adults will now be limited to pornographic material only. Other posts considered sensitive will be viewable upon user confirmation.
The change refers to the published statement last week on Discord requiring server owners to mark their communities as NSFW if they were organized around topics that were prohibited for minors. According to the company, the content would be inaccessible to iOS users. The measure, however, was not well received by the community, as it limited communication resources and made it impossible for creators to manage the content for which they are responsible.
Discord justifies itself
According to Discord, the decision involves the terms of use of Apple, which has a series of restrictions on nude content on iOS. However, according to the company, the change to relax the NSFW rules will be possible due to a loophole in the iPhone manufacturer's terms of use that allows the display of "incidental mature content", as long as it is hidden by default.
According to the exploit, Discord content can be displayed on iOS as long as users choose to view it through a website rather than the app itself. This way, users who want to view blocked content can be redirected to view it via a browser, for example.
The measure does not resolve the community's complaints, but serves as an alternative while Discord discusses the terms with the Apple. According to Discord, the users' complaints are valid, since Art communities, or even servers used for RPG games, commonly discuss and share content that is not necessarily pornography, but that involves nudity and ends up being blocked by the restrictions imposed by Apple.
