According to one anúncio made in a platform support forum, the Discord Discord will now block servers marked as NSFW (which feature explicit content) for all iOS devices. Discord already had a feature that prevented people under 18 from joining communities or viewing content marked as NSFW, but now iPhone and iPad users will not be able to view anything with the tag, even if they are of legal age.
The change apparently won’t affect Android users. “All iOS users (including those 18 and older) are blocked from joining and accessing NSFW servers. iOS users 18 and older will still be able to join and access NSFW communities on the desktop and browser versions of Discord,” the announcement reads.
Discord did not say whether the decision to block NSFW servers was a requirement of the Apple.But, as the The Verge pointed out, Apple has strict and sometimes even puritanical rules regarding explicit content. The site even recalled when Tumblr deleted all pornographic content of its platform, which hosted several pages of artists producing adult entertainment, in order to remain on the App Store.
On March 22, at the request of the Apple, Discord changed its rating from 12+ to 17+. It's possible to speculate that Discord's decision to block NSFW communities on iOS is an attempt to reverse the rating change, as the chat platform aims to be a child-friendly environment geared towards discussing video games.
On Twitter, iOS and Discord users complained about the decision, with some threatening change for Android devices and boycott the Apple. According to these users, the block harms artists who produce NSFW illustrations and administrators of communities with explicit content.
