A survey by Winnin revealed what type of content dominated the internet for Brazilians in 2020 – at least when it comes to videos. Using a tool that uses artificial intelligence to monitor videos, the company mapped that games, family, football and TV shows were the subjects with the highest engagement – especially with the pandemic.

The survey evaluated engagement data on videos on Facebook, Instagram and YouTube, also determining on which social networks the topic yields the highest return. All five main topics presented the YouTube as the highest-yielding platform for video engagement, naturally.
According to the report, the most successful video formats were live streams and challenges (or rather, the “little dances” of TikTok). Other prominent content was pranks, parodies and vlogs.
Consumption habits
The research revealed that the two main research themes were games – “shooting” and “action and adventure”, with an average interaction of 314,3 and 228,4 thousand people per video, respectively. Part of the reason is due to games like Fortnite and Freefire have events that go beyond the game's objectives to serve as a virtual world, such as concerts and fashion shows. In both themes, women also account for more than a third of the content views.
The boom in family videos (198,4 thousand people per video) is related to the current state of the pandemic. With many digital influencers being forced to stay at home, family members are now the main theme of much content in this category.
TV shows and football
Even though it was suspended until the end of June 2020, football was still one of the topics that dominated the Brazilian internet. With an average engagement of 145,2 thousand people per video, this segment “survived” the pandemic basically based on parodies, player challenges and reactions to team boots and shirts.
Finally, TV programs (average engagement of 134,5 thousand people per video) had two peaks in relevance since the beginning of the pandemic. The first, related to the BBB 20 final, and the second, with the start of Fazenda 12.
