Cortex-A78
Let's start with the Cortex-A78 CPU, which is the evolution of the line that began with the Cortex-A76 two years ago, and offers a sustainable performance 20% higher than the Cortex-A77. In addition, it also takes up less space than the old CPU.
Power consumption has been kept at 1 watt, meaning the battery will not be affected by the use of the new CPU. Even better, for certain tasks, power consumption is 50% lower. This is great news for the battery life of future smartphones that will be equipped with it.
New Mali-G78 GPU and new Ethos-N78 NPU
Additionally, Arm also introduced the new Mali-G78 GPU with support for up to 24 cores, which has up to 25% higher performance than the previous model, the Mali-G77. For gaming, the performance gain is up to 17% higher.
The company also introduced a new GPU for mid-range smartphones, the Mali-G68, which has the same specifications as the Mali-G78, but with support for fewer cores.
Another new feature from Arm is the Ethos-N78 neural processing unit (NPU), which has a 25% performance gain over the previous model, the Ethos-N77.
Cortex-X1
The new Cortex-X1 marks the beginning of a new microarchitecture series from Arm. The design is similar to the Cortex-A78, but it is designed to deliver peak performance.
It offers 30 percent peak performance over the Cortex-A77, or 22 percent over the Cortex-A78, but at higher power consumption. The new program allows Arm partners to build custom processors to meet their needs.
Smartphones equipped with Arm's new CPUs, GPUs and NPUs are expected to hit the market later this year or early 2021.
