Fans of The Mandalorian, a spin-off of Star Wars on Disney+, had a pleasant surprise this Thursday (17/12). When you search for “Baby Yoda” or “Grogu” – his name revealed in the second season of the series – on your cell phone, a knowledge panel instantly appears with access to an image of the character in augmented reality (AR).
The experience is available on most smartphones. Just search for “Grogu” in Chrome or in the search widget on your cell phone and the panel with the words “See the Child in 3D” will appear. From there, tap “See in 3D” and enjoy.
Of course, Baby Yoda, like other augmented reality models available on Google, requires a quick calibration on the smartphone to view them. In the case of Baby Yoda, the character doesn't do much other than make funny noises, blink his eyes and shake his head, but you can take photos of the encounter.
Since launching the feature in 2019, Google has been making several objects available in AR. A few days ago, the company added 50 animals in augmented reality that the user can play with – among them, a zebra, a pig and a hippopotamus.
Other initiatives
This isn't Google's first collaboration with Lucasfilm. In November, the two companies teamed up to launch an augmented reality app, AR Mandalorian. The app, exclusive to top-of-the-line smartphones such as the Google Pixel 5G, offers the public the possibility of seeing scenes from the first season of the series in their environment and interacting with the characters.
Baby Yoda, in addition to augmented reality, is also available as playable character in Fortnite Season 5. In the game, Grogu makes an appearance alongside Mando, protagonist of The Mandalorian, in a ship derived from the Star Wars universe.
